Nicaraguan Cigars History
Joya de Nicaragua marks a major milestone this year with a commemorative cigar being commissioned. No Nicaraguan cigar factory has been around longer and no such factory is so closely aligned with the country and its people.
The Joya de Nicaragua factory knows the intricacies into making the very best cigars. It’s not too strong an argument to say that Nicaraguan cigars would be very different without Joya de Nicaragua, and not as well known around the world.
Nicaraguan cigars are recognised through their long-term relationships with countries such as Russia, Italy, Japan, Finland and the United Kingdom. These countries were all ahead of the game as they realised the impact that these cigars could have on the rest of the world.
Joya de Nicaragua was founded as the Nicaragua Cigar Company back in 1968, the first premium cigar factory in the country. To begin with, Joya de Nicaragua was merely the name of one of the cigars, later it would become a brand that the world would learn. This is due to the fact that the deep, dark tobacco of the aged filler in Antano Reserva brings the flavour of Nicaragua to its finest shape.
The famous old factory is a truly special place, despite its dark history. It was used as a base by both Sandinistas and Somoza loyalists during different periods and was bombed from the air as well as reputedly being the site of summary executions. Its walls retain no horrors though. There is a sense of joy and optimism there. The people look out for each other. When asked what Joya de Nicaragua means to people, the majority say “My life”.
The company continues to strive for innovation and is constantly looking to the future by using new ways to communicate. They have recognised that one single approach won’t fit all.
