Punch Cuban Cigars History
The Punch cigar was launched in 1840 and became a highly successful cigar in Victorian Britain. The brand was established by a German man named Stockman who had named the brand after the popular puppet show character, Mr. Punch of “Punch and Judy” fame.
In 1874 the brand was purchased by Luis Corujo, and sold a decade later to Manuel Lopez Fernandez, whose name is still represented on the company’s cigar bands and boxes.
Fernandez retired in 1924 and the brand suffered severe economic hardship under the ownership of Esperanza Valle Comas, who oversaw it for only a few years before the stock market crash of 1929.
Still maintaining popularity in the UK, the firm Fernandez, Palicio y Cia purchased Punch in 1930. Punch then grew to become one of the most renowned cigars brands alongside the company’s other brands, Belinda, La Escepcion and Hoyo de Monterrey.
